Message about a banning? IF IT WAS YOU PLEASE LET US KNOW!

Today I got an email that someone was banned, and they provided their IP address. I looked into the matter, and their IP address is not banned on this forum in any capacity, and no IP's anywhere close are banned either, range or otherwise. I replied to them via email and asked for a username if they were able to use one so I could get more details, but haven't heard back yet.

All I know is:
- Crane Quad owner
- wants troubleshooting help and was "banned"
- what their IP address is
- their email

I won't share those last two (nice try foreign intelligence), but if this is you, and for whatever reason you did not get my email, but can see this thread, please send us another email with the username you used when you registered and let us know too that you did in fact see this thread. I'll post responses to this thread if that is what is happening. As always, your information is 100% confidential when you use that contact form, and I am glad it was used for its intended purpose today -- I sincerely hope we can get to the bottom of this!!!

I have seen exactly zero new Quad inquiries on this forum, so it is safe to assume that the user does not currently have access even now. But since the word "banned" came up, now is a good time to outline why we ban and the few instances we have. Because believe me, they are rare. But they do happen. Luckily, if you are reading this, 100% not to you.

I WANT TO BE CLEAR ON WHY WE BAN!

- We ban when unsolicited advertisements are posted, in particular ones in languages other than English (great example: shoe stores in Brazil got 5-10 accounts and a multitude of IP addresses and email domains blacklisted permanently in one thread alone. That was a fun afternoon!). This does not apply to ANY legitimate M3D customer to be explicitly clear.

- We ban when use of this server is for nefarious, illegal, or malicious purposes. You know those links that you click and your computer gets infected? Yeah that. I don't take kindly to that and that shoe store in Brazil had a malware cousin that was equally bad and got an equally huge boot, this time from Eurasia. This does not apply to ANY legitimate M3D customer to be explicitly clear.

- We ban when someone cannot follow the rules and.... we don't know yet. That hasn't happened. If/when the time comes we'll cross that bridge but for now it hasn't. Don't push it. So yet again, this does not apply to ANY legitimate M3D customer, and thus far ANYONE either.

So we have never in the history of this forum banned an M3D customer to date -- if you believe we have, LET US KNOW as it is IN ERROR!!!. We can't fix what we don't know about, and I cannot thank enough this member for bringing this problem to our attention. I will personally take ownership of the task of figuring out precisely what happened so that we can prevent it in the future if at all possible.

Thank you all and, again, if you see this but not my email, and this was you, PLEASE use the contact form a second time to send me your username that gave you that error, and also just double-check to see if your account went through email validation -- I can do that last bit manually but will need your username to do so.

Thanks Shep. I've been banning obvious spammers (LOTS of them; looks like I have more to ban), but haven't banned anyone who was posting within the context of this site to the best of my knowledge.

Yup, I'll occasionally swing by too and see a fresh one that I'll take care of and notice you've gotten a few dozen that I never got the chance to see, but always for spam ;) You really stay on top of it -- thank you! The vast majority of bans on ANY forum are for spam. ((EDIT: if you want an example of what constitutes "spam" see here for a guy who got permabanned for it)) The rest are the unruly members, so I wanted to be clear with this thread that a) we haven't had any yet so as a result b) legitimate members who see a "banned" message are seeing it in error rather than something they did wrong.

I do not want to have the impression that oh there was someone that looked a lot like you and did some bad stuff so we're gonna blame everything similar to you -- no, there hasn't been anyone, please continue to message us if you get a banned message with

- IP address
- username
- email

and we'll lift it and validate the account if not already (hell most of the time this forum goes to my spam folder anyhow so I would 100% not put it past it being something like that). Messages using the forum contact us form (which I am struggling to find the link to btw) go to both Kenny66 and my email addresses directly, and I at least get immediate notification via my phone.

That comes from lots of experience moderating on a site with 250k+ members. We don't get too many slipping through on the other site due to having a moderation period and recaptcha on every moderated post.

Best I ever had was 10k active any given time (probably a few million overall but it was tied into a game -- I would speculate 100k even knew the forum existed at all), this was 2011 and it was brutal. Huge props!

Recaptcha sounds like not a bad idea... I'll bring that up with Kenny66 to see what he thinks on it. Bots don't do well with recaptchas, but there's always human operators that can overcome them.

Changing to a standard topic rather than an announcement. It has been almost a month with no response as of late so I think it pretty fair to say that identifying whoever this was is now an effort lost in the sands of time.
